How to Choose the Right Mirror Size and Shape for Your Wall
How to Choose the Right Mirror Size and Shape for Your Wall
Updated · Design Tips by Glass Helper
A mirror can completely transform a space — from making a narrow hallway appear wider to adding elegant symmetry in your living room.
But choosing the right size and shape takes more than guesswork.
Here’s how to select a mirror that fits your wall, enhances lighting, and complements your décor.
1) Measure the wall space before anything else
Always start by measuring the available wall area.
Interior designers generally suggest that a wall mirror should be between two-thirds and three-quarters the width of the furniture beneath it
— for instance, above a console or sofa.

2) Height placement: think eye level and reflection
Hang your mirror so the centre sits at average eye level (around 150–160 cm from the floor) to create a natural reflection line.
For tall decorative mirrors, ensure they reflect pleasant elements like artwork or light rather than cluttered corners.
3) Shape affects mood and flow
- Round or oval mirrors soften sharp lines and work well in minimalist or Scandi-inspired interiors.
- Rectangular mirrors elongate the wall and are ideal above fireplaces or sideboards.
- Square mirrors give a balanced, modern look — often used in pairs for symmetry.
- Arch-top or irregular mirrors add artistic flair and a touch of architectural drama.

4) Balance proportion and frame thickness
The mirror’s frame should complement your furniture scale — a chunky frame for large walls, or thin metal edges for sleek modern spaces.
In small rooms, frameless or thin-framed designs help keep the look airy and open.
5) Use mirrors to enhance natural light
Place mirrors opposite windows or light sources to bounce sunlight deeper into the room.
According to U.S. Department of Energy – Daylighting Guide,
reflective surfaces can significantly improve interior brightness and reduce energy usage when positioned smartly.
6) Choose the right glass quality
Not all mirrors are created equal. Opt for low-iron glass for crystal clarity and color accuracy.
Always ensure mirrors are manufactured to BS EN 1036 standards for quality and safety.

7) Safety first — especially for bathrooms and gyms
For humid or high-activity areas like bathrooms or home gyms, use toughened safety-backed mirrors that comply with EN 12600 impact testing.

Always use professional fixings and wall anchors rated for the mirror’s weight.
